Black Carpet Beetle

The black carpet beetle is not a pest that will just eat your food or contaminate your pantry. So just sealing up your perishable food items will not diminish their interest. They will come into your house through cracks, and they will refuse to leave, often eating animal products like wool, leather, and silk. Just about the only thing that is good about the black carpet beetle is that they will eat dead hair- however, they will eat the carpet too. They eat dead bugs as well, but they will also eat everything else. Finding one where you sleep or eat is very disturbing, and embarrassing if you have guests. The black carpet beetle must be stopped!

Black carpet beetles are very small, usually just up to 5 millimeters long. However, they are a health risk and you need to get rid of them if you hope to have a clean home. They will settle into your home and lay their eggs, and they will multiply. Black carpet beetles are a problem you have to nip in the bud before they infest every part of your house. If you only see one or two on occasion, you do not have a problem, and you will be able to just kill them or send them outside. But if you find large amounts of them, you will need to take immediate action.

These pests are very likely to get into your house in the spring. They feed on dead things, and dried or decayed plant or animal material. This is one of the reasons why you should always keep your chimney clean, even if you do not use it- it is not uncommon to find a dead creature in the chimney causing an infestation. Dead animals in an attic or basement will also attract black carpet beetles, as well as many other disgusting pests.

A common place where black carpet beetles and other pests are found, such as ants, are in places where things like dry dog food are stored. Grains need to be sealed and stored, in a plastic or metal container. Remember, many pests can eat through paper or plastic bags, or cardboard. Your problem will be greatly diminished if the source of food for these pests is very scarce. It is also key to make sure that any clothing that you will not use for a while, such as wool that is stored in the attic, is sealed in some kind of container, preferably with moth balls or other deterrents.

If you have a serious problem with black carpet beetles, some sort of pesticide might be your only choice. If you can, find the most environmentally friendly, safest chemical. Pay attention to the instructions and make sure to always prevent yourself from inhaling or directly touching these chemicals. Clean anything that has come in contact with the insects, and throw away all food that has been infested. Pests are a serious problem, and if you do not get rid of them, it can be very unsanitary and cause disease.
